If we’re to believe Punxsutawney Phil, spring is right around the corner. This has us excited to get outside with our pups to play and explore the scents that come with warmer weather. It also could mean that we’re just antsy to get outside. Either way, exploring the outdoors with your pup is a wonderful way to enhance your human-animal bond.
When warm weather heads our way, we like to head outdoors for our puppy training time. If you’ve joined us in the #12WeekPuppyChallenge, then you know that practicing ‘sit and stay’ is fun to do in a park where there’s a little distraction but not too much interference. This type of stimuli is good for a pup to encounter, as the world often isn’t as quiet as it is in your living room. A focused 15-minute training session followed by a good, long walk will have you and your pup fully exercised, and ready for a little outdoor picnic together.
Picnic, you are probably asking, with my pup? Yes, a picnic with your pup. It’s good to get your puppy exposed to the types of places and scents that he’ll eventually partake in with you and your friends. Also, there’s something very satisfying about making your dog a special treat at a local park that has a barbeque grill.
There are a few things that you’ll need to make your picnic with Fido a hit. These include:
- Water and food bowl
- 3 ounces of low-fat ground beef, chicken or turkey
- ½ Kale leaf
The amount of protein you need is dependent upon the size of your puppy. Typically, a pup’s nutrition requirements are based on the expected size reached at adulthood. Three ounces of lean protein averages 200 calories. Make sure to include this in your pup’s overall daily caloric intake. Also, don’t forget to pack enough for your burger too!
It’s very simple to have a BBQ with your pup. Simply prepare a burger on the grill, just like you would for yourself only smaller, dog-size. In this case, to make your pup’s burger more balanced, finely chop up the kale leaf ahead of time so that you can easily mix it into the ground protein. Cook your pup’s burger to medium, and when done allow to cool. Once cooled, sprinkle with a small amount of the parsley and oregano, then place bite-size pieces into your puppy's food bowl. Serve with a few commands, like sit and stay until you want him to eat. This helps teach your dog proper manners when around human food. Don’t forget to munch down on your burger while you enjoy watching your pup gobble up his homemade goodness.

Ground Beef (97% low-fat): 122 calories, 22 grams of protein, 325 milligrams of potassium, good amount of iron, and trace amounts of vitamin A and calcium.
Ground Chicken: 161 calories, 20 grams of protein, 575 milligrams of potassium, a small amount of iron and calcium.
Ground Turkey: 219 calories, 21 grams of protein, 235 milligrams of potassium, small amounts of iron, vitamin A and calcium.
Kale Leaf (½): small amount of calories, loaded with vitamin A and trace amounts of vitamin C.
Parsley: large amounts of chlorophyll, good amounts of vitamins K, C and A, and iron, defends against bacteria causing infections.
Oregano: high in antioxidants and flavonoids, antimicrobial, aids in digestive problems, gas, and diarrhea.
It’s really rewarding to create special times and events with your pup.
